Christmas Shopping

1. Remember your consumer rights
Under the Sale of Goods Act you are entitled to a repair, replacement or refund if an item
is faulty, not fit for its purpose or not as described.
2. Keep receipts
If an item is faulty it is much easier to get redress if you can produce proof of purchase.
3. Gift receipts
If buying a gift ask for a gift receipt. It will not state the price of the item but will provide
the recipient of the gift with proof of purchase if a fault arises.
4. Gift vouchers
If buying a gift voucher check for an expiry date and ensure that the person receiving it
will be able to use it in the required time. Keep the gift voucher safely as shops are not
obliged to replace lost vouchers.
5. Check the item when you get home
If an item is faulty it is important to act quickly, so always check that products are
working as soon as you get them home.
6. Online shopping
In addition to your basic consumer rights, online shoppers are entitled, in most cases, to
return an unwanted item within seven days of receipt for a no-quibble refund. Postage
and packing charges are not usually refundable however. Always check that the seller is
reputable.
7. Health & Safety
Look out for the CE marking when buying toys and electrical items. The mark shows that
the item conforms to essential EU health and safety requirements.
8. Watch out for scams
If offered toys or other gifts at a “knock-down price”, check if the items are authentic. You
have no comeback if the item is counterfeit.
9. Most importantly, don’t forget to shop local and support local business.
These businesses add so much character and charm to our locality as well as providing
vital local employment. We all need to pull together and see these wonderful businesses
continue to survive and thrive.
