Child Hip Surgery
Child Hip Dysplasia Surgery Audit
It has been revealed that at least 1,800 children who underwent hip dysplasia surgery will undergo a medical review. On Friday last, the HSE published the independent audit on hip surgery thresholds for children with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH).
The audit examined 147 cases across three hospitals, namely Temple Street, the National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh (NOHC) and Crumlin Hospital. It found that up to 79% of the surgeries performed at Cappagh Orthopaedic Hospital were unnecessary, while 60% in a
sample of cases at Temple Street Hospital had surgery at a threshold that was too low. At Crumlin Hospital, one case was determined to be unnecessary.
The clinical audit was conducted by Simon Thomas, a UK paediatric consultant orthopaedic surgeon. He discovered that surgeons were employing a ‘novel technique’ that they thought could be done sooner and was less invasive.
Our Thoughts
The nature of these accusations and the ongoing investigation are extremely troubling for parents whose children have had hip surgeries at these hospitals. There are significant concerns regarding patient care and medical ethics raised by the claims of needless surgeries. Affected families should receive support and open communication while they deal with the fallout from these upsetting disclosures.
